Lesson 2/26 | Study Time: 30 Min
2. Describe the main points of health and safety policies and procedures

Your employer may have policies and procedures covering a wide range of health and safety subjects to incorporate the legal requirements.

You will need to use the legal framework and communicate with your employer about local health and safety policies and procedures.

A small organisation employs less than 5 people. You will need to consider what constitutes your workplace. It could be a residential home, hospice, hospital, office or an individual’s home.

If i get a fly in my eye, is it my fault for sticking my head out of the window, or yours for opening the window for me? Or both!

Workplaces can be anywhere you work.

For example, in a residential home, an individual’s home, a kitchen, laundry room, and office.

You will need to consider a vehicle as a workplace if you drive or cycle between work locations during working hours.

These are some examples of the key areas that are covered by health and safety legislation, policies and procedures.

Infection control
Personal safety
Code of conduct
Medication
Safeguarding
First aid
Fire safety
Smoking and vaping at work
Food safety and hygiene
Security measures
Moving and positioning
Personal hygiene
Risk assessments
Waste disposal
Emergency procedures
Lone working
Equipment safety

There are many dangerous hazards that surround us which could cause harm, serious injury and even death.

Although you will aim to give care and support in a person-centred way, you must always remember that health and safety comes first for everyone involved. Risk assessing and documented risk assessments are a major part of health and safety in every area of your work.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
This is the HSE’s datasheet on managing the risks from hot water and surfaces in health and social care.

In the event of an emergency, it will also be useful if you are aware of these essential health and safety procedures:
