8. Describe ways of helping individuals to make informed choices

Would you like a berry?

Your role is to help individuals to make informed choices.

This will be about the things that happen everyday and also in planning for their longer term future.

Each time you work with an individual you should be able to give them choices.

An individual’s choices will be different depending on their abilities and the different types of tasks you undertake.
Good communication is essential so that you can give choices and individuals can make them.
It doesn’t matter what environment you support an individual in, there should always be plenty of opportunity to provide choices.

This is an example of some of the every day choices that you can give individuals, depending on your job role.

When would you like to get up?
What would you like to eat and drink?
What activities would you like to do?
What would you like to wear?
What type of products do you want to use?

You can support individuals to make choices by giving them encouragement and giving praise when they have made a choice.

You are aiming to give an individual the confidence to continue to make choices about other aspects of their lives.

Be careful not to sound patronising. This means to treat a person in a way that seems kind or helpful but the individual could think you appear superior. This is why getting to know the people you work with is important; so you can understand what is normal for them.
