18. Fire Classifications


The UK puts fire into six fire classes.

Knowing the classes will help you to identify the type of fire and type of extinguisher that needs to be used. Even if you don’t attempt to put the fire out, the information will be useful for the Fire Service when they tackle the fire.

The 6 classes of fire are:

Fires involving solid materials such as fabric, paper and wood.

Fires involving flammable or combustible liquids. Petrol, grease and oil fires are included in this class.

Fires that involve flammable gases. Includes hydrogen, butane and methane.

Fires that involve combustible metals. Includes chemicals such as megnesium aluminum and potassium.

Class E
Fires involving electrical appliances. Except when the power supply is turned off then an electrical fire can fall into any category.
Class F
Fires that involve cooking fats and oils. Typically a chip pan fire.
