17. Fire Blankets

Fire blankets are useful safety devices made of non-flammable materials.

You can put them over a small fire that cannot be put out with water. A fire blanket can be used if you have a stove or pan which catches fire or if someone’s clothes catch fire. The fire blanket can be wrapped around a person to put the fire out. They cut off the oxygen supply breaking the fire tetrahedron so the fire cannot continue.

Fire blanket tips:

  • Keep a fire blanket in or close to the kitchen but never too close to your cooker.
  • A damp cloth can be used if you do not have a fire blanket.
  • The fire blanket will be marked to show whether it should be thrown away after use or used again after cleaning, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Make sure you buy a fire blanket that conforms to the correct British Standard for it’s location. Don’t be tempted buy a cheap copy – this could be very dangerous.

Place the fire blanket near an escape route. This gives you the option to walk away and contact the Fire Service if you feel the fire is too large to tackle.
