14. How to deal with a fire

Fire blanket

Do not attempt to put out a fire unless you are confident you are able to do so safely.

You will need to know how to competently use a fire extinguisher and which type to use. You will need to assess the size of the fire and if it is small enough for you to manage. If you are in a kitchen, you can also use a fire blanket (more on these in section 17).

Competently tackling small fires quickly, can stop fires from getting worse and endangering lives. If you don’t know what you are doing, you could make it much worse.

If you are in any doubt, GET OUT and STAY OUT and leave it to the professionals.

If your clothes catch fire – remember:

STOP, DROP AND ROLL!

  • Do not run around as you will make the fire worse.
  • Lay down and roll to make the fire harder to spread.
  • Smother the fire with a heavy material, like a blanket.
