You will need to know the types of extinguisher available to you and what they can be safely used on to avoid making the situation worse or injuring yourself.
To remember how to use a fire extinguisher safely, use the acronym
P A S S
This stands for:
PULL – Pull out the pin at the top of the extinguisher. The pin releases a locking mechanism enabling you to discharge the contents of the extinguisher.
AIM – Aim at the base of the fire, NOT at the flames.
SQUEEZE – Squeeze the lever slowly to release the extinguishing agent in the extinguisher. If the handle is released, the discharge will stop.
SWEEP – Using a sweeping motion, move the fire extinguisher back and forth until the fire is completely out. Operate the extinguisher from a safe distance and then move towards the fire once it starts to diminish.
DO NOT walk away once the fire is out. WATCH the area for a few minutes in case it re-ignites.
RECHARGE the extinguisher after use. Recharging a fire extinguisher involves refilling or replacing it. Refilling an extinguisher requires specialist equipment. It is usually carried out by the company who services your fire extinguishers.
DO NOT attempt to use a fire extinguisher unless you know what to do.
