12. Describe how care environments can promote or undermine people’s dignity and rights

These are some of the ways health and social care environments can undermine people’s dignity and rights. This will have a negative effect on them:

  1. Lack of private space. For example, for confidential discussions or personal care.
  2. Poor culture of care and attitudes.
  3. Language differences and barriers.
  4. Lack of holistic, person centred support.
  5. Poor prioritisation of individuals’ care and support needs.
  6. Overcrowded wards and mixed-sex accommodation.
  7. Inadequate and unsuitable facilities.
  8. Under-staffing, inadequate staff/individual ratios resulting in mixed skill levels and lack of time to provide individualised care and support.

These are some of the ways of working that will promote people’s dignity and rights. This will affect them positively:

Competence in the workplace
Provide a clean, well maintained living environment
Encourage independence through well planned activities and support plans
Positive staff ethos on respect, privacy and confidentiality
Provision of adequate food and drink
Demonstrate compassion and empathy
Treat all individuals equally, providing individualised care avoiding discrimination
Acknowledge individuals’ views and feelings
Staff knowledge and desire to share knowledge on harm and abuse with individuals
Guidelines for checking and monitoring equipment
Ensure privacy and dignity when supporting people with personal care
Empower individuals to make decisions and choices that might include risks
