2. Explain your own role and responsibilities in safeguarding individuals

Lesson 2/21 | Study Time: 30 Min
2. Explain your own role and responsibilities in safeguarding individuals

In your role you should always promote the individual’s wellbeing.

It is important that everybody (e.g. professionals, family members, carers and key individuals) work in partnership to stop abuse and neglect wherever possible. This includes preventing harm and reducing the risk of abuse or neglect to adults with care and support needs.

Wellbeing revolves around the following factors:

Work
Learning
Housing
Leisure
Family
Social participation
Security
Environment
Health

Your role is to work with individuals in a way that safeguards them from abuse and neglect but still supports their right to make choices and have control about how they want to live. Providing them with the knowledge and understanding of how to stay safe can give people the confidence to raise any concerns they may have.

It is important that you know ways of working to safeguard adults in your workplace.

Your policies and procedures support you to meet the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) regulations and the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers in England.

There are six principles that apply to all sectors and settings.

The six principles are referenced in “Care and Support Statutory Guidance” issued under the Care Act 2014 by the Department of Health. The sectors they apply to include:

  • -Care and Support Services
  • -Further Education Colleges
  • -Commissioning
  • -Regulation and Provision of Health and Care Services
  • -Social Work
  • -Healthcare
  • -Welfare Benefits
  • -Housing
  • -Wider Local Authority Functions
  • -The Criminal Justice System
  • -Underpins all Adults Safeguarding work

The six principles are:

Empowerment

People being supported and encouraged to make their own decisions and informed consent.

Prevention

It is better to take action before harm occurs.

Proportionality

The least intrusive response appropriate to the risk presented.

Protection

Support and representation for those in greatest need.

Partnership

Local solutions  through  services    working with their  communities. Communities have a part  to  play  in   preventing,   detecting   and reporting  neglect and abuse.

Accountability

Accountability  and transparency  in  delivering  safeguarding.

-It is your responsibility to safeguard the individuals who you provide a service to.

-You must never assume that somebody else will recognise and report what you have seen or heard.

-If you do have any concerns you need to raise these through the correct procedure.

-Raising concerns is called ‘whistleblowing’. This is covered in more detail later on in this course.

-Abuse can result in serious physical and mental problems, and in some cases it can result in death.

You will be committing abuse if:

you fail to act to prevent harm being caused to a person you have responsibility for or, you act in a way that results in harm to a person who legitimately relies you.

For the individuals you support and care for, your role is to…

Protect
Observe
Record
Speak Up
Monitor
