Lesson 12/19 | Study Time: 30 Min
12. Using risk assessments to promote independence in managing medication

Risk assessments provide clear guidance and information on how to keep people safe and prevent accidents and incidents.

They should promote a positive person-centred approach to risk taking for individuals.

It is important to:

  1. Work in partnership to support individuals to take informed risks.
  2. Help the individual to have their choices met in the safest possible way.
  3. Identify hazards, evaluate the level of risk and put in place measures, or procedures to reduce the risk.
  4. Provide the opportunity to reflect on difficulties and dilemmas commonly encountered when addressing issues of risk, in the context of the legal and policy frameworks

Control risks by completing a risk assessment

This guidance is taken from HSE’s leaflet called: Five Steps to Risk Assessment

When dealing with medication, it is important to work in partnership to support the individual to take risks and have their choices met in the safest possible way.

And finally review and update the risk assessment

The risk assessment and safe working practices must be regularly reviewed.

This must happen straight away if there has been an incident or significant change in working practice.

You must always tell your manager if there is an incident or if you feel unsafe or in danger.
