9. Ordering, receiving and collecting medication

When ordering, receiving and collecting medication…

Local policy

All these steps will be covered by your organisations policies and procedures. There will also be information in each individuals care plan which you need to check.

Check existing supplies

First check medications left in the cupboard are correct, checking against the Medication Administration Record (MAR), before checking in new supplies.

Check new supply

Check in the new medication against the order.

Have you been sent correct medication, dosage, and amount?

Any errors should be reported to pharmacy immediately.

Count

Count in all medication, repeat prescriptions, pre-order forms and record on MAR sheet giving date, quantity, dose and type of medication.

Store

Store correctly according to instructions and organisations procedures.

In a residential care home…

Controlled drugs must be checked in by 2 care workers.

In the community…

Controlled drugs are treated the same as any other medicine, but they are stored in a safe, allocated place. This allocated storage place must be recorded in the care plan. The number of items is recorded on MAR sheet, for example, the number of tablets.

Locate and read your organisation’s procedures for reordering supplies and checking in new medications.
You will need to demonstrate your skills and competence to be able to do these important tasks.
