Interactive Learning & Group Activities with Gemini in Google Slides

Module 4: Interactive Learning & Group Activities with Gemini in Google Slides

This module moves beyond static presentations and explores how to use Google Slides as a dynamic activity hub. By leveraging Gemini, you can facilitate real-time collaboration, rapid brainstorming, and "live" content creation that turns students or team members into active contributors.

1. The "Live Synthesis" Activity

In this activity, the facilitator uses the Gemini Side Panel to summarize group discussions in real-time, creating a visual record of a "braindump" session.

  • The Setup: Open a blank slide titled "Key Takeaways."

  • The Action: As participants share ideas verbally, the facilitator types the raw notes into the Meet chat or a side Doc.

  • The Gemini Intervention: Use the Side Panel in Slides to "Summarize the last 10 minutes of discussion from @Meeting_Notes and format them into five clear, impactful bullet points on this slide."

  • Learning Outcome: Participants see their fragmented ideas transformed into a professional, cohesive narrative instantly.

2. The "Visual Metaphor" Challenge

This activity uses the "Create an image" feature to test participants' understanding of complex, abstract concepts by asking them to represent them visually.

  • The Task: Assign each small group a difficult concept (e.g., "Quantum Entanglement," "Market Volatility," or "Supply Chain Resilience").

  • The Action: Groups must work together to craft a single Gemini prompt that creates a visual metaphor for that concept.

  • The Refinement: If the first image is too literal, they must refine the prompt (e.g., "Make it an abstract 3D render using interconnected glowing threads to represent resilience").

  • Learning Outcome: Improves "Prompt Engineering" skills while deepening the conceptual understanding of the subject matter.

3. "Document-to-Deck" Speed Challenge

This activity teaches participants how to identify core information and translate it for an audience using the synthesis power of Gemini.

  • The Setup: Provide a 3-page technical document or a long-form article in Google Drive.

  • The Activity: Groups have 15 minutes to create a 3-slide summary using the Gemini Side Panel.

  • The Prompting Strategy: 1. "Summarize the 'Risk Factors' section of @Industry_Report." 2. "Create a slide layout for these risks that uses a 'Professional' tone." 3. "Generate a minimalist vector icon to represent each risk identified."

  • Learning Outcome: Develops the ability to filter "noise" from "signal" using AI tools.

4. The "AI Persona" Roleplay

Use Gemini in the Slides Side Panel to act as a specific stakeholder, providing feedback on the presentation as it is being built.

  • The Activity: While drafting a pitch deck, participants "invite" an AI persona into the room.

  • The Prompt: "Act as a skeptical CFO. Review the 'Budget' slide I just created and list three difficult questions you would ask about our projected ROI."

  • The Collaborative Pivot: The group must then work to update the slide content to address the AI's "concerns."

  • Learning Outcome: Encourages critical thinking and prepares participants for real-world scrutiny.

5. Facilitating Breakout Room "Report Outs"

Standardize how groups report back from breakout sessions using a shared master deck and Gemini.

  • The Workflow:

    1. Each breakout group is assigned one slide in a "Master Deck."

    2. Instead of just typing notes, they use "Help me create a slide" to draft their findings based on their breakout notes.

    3. When everyone returns to the main room, the facilitator uses Gemini to "Identify common themes across all 5 breakout slides and create a 'Final Consensus' slide at the end."

Activity Facilitation Checklist

  • [ ] Have I shared the Slides deck with "Editor" permissions for all participants?

  • [ ] Is the Gemini Side Panel open and ready for real-time prompts?

  • [ ] Did I provide a "Prompt Cheat Sheet" to help groups communicate with the AI?

  • [ ] Have I set a timer to keep the "Live Synthesis" phase high-energy?
