7. Confirm the individual has taken medication

Lesson 7/7 | Study Time: 30 Min
7. Confirm the individual has taken medication

You must confirm the individual has taken their medication.

It is possible that an individual could hide their medication or give it to someone else.

Don’t forget to record that the individual has taken their medication, with the date and time. Note any observations of their condition and anything else that might be relevant to their health and wellbeing.

These are some key reasons why it is important to check and confirm an individual has taken their medication:

Health benefits

Medication is prescribed by a professional to support a person’s health, wellbeing or recovery.

It could be harmful

Not taking it could cause their condition to deteriorate and it may be fatal. This means for some people, it is possible that they could die without their medication.

Prevent overdose

People could collect medication with the intention of taking an overdose.

Prevent abuse

People could keep medication to misuse as a form of abuse to another person or to sell to another person to misuse.

Give protection

So another person cannot take the medication which could make them seriously ill and could result in their death if it has not been prescribed specifically for them.

Children will always find a tablet which has been dropped on the floor or hidden under a bed. Children also have a habit of putting things in their mouths or ears without knowing what they are.

Ahhh, he’s so cute! It’s a shame they don’t stay cute forever!

Let’s hope he doesn’t put anything unpleasant in his ear or nose unlike my son but that’s a different story!
