8. Ways that people can keep well

We can support people to keep well and avoid or lessen mental health problems by encouraging the following things:

Physical activity

This is a great way to improve mental wellbeing.

Research shows that doing exercise releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins in the brain. Even a short burst of 10 minutes brisk walking can improve mental alertness, energy and mood. Everything from getting out in the garden to running a marathon can significantly improve quality of life.

Relaxation

Taking a break when things are stressful is important.

Make sure life is not all work and no play, stay away from technology for a time, do things that you enjoy. Simply taking a bubble bath can benefit wellbeing and reduce stress.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness can be very beneficial as a tool to manage wellbeing and mental health.

There are some great apps that people can use such as Headspace and Calm. There are also a number of podcasts and websites giving guided meditations and hints and tips and videos like the one below.

Support groups

Peer support groups or self-help groups for people who have had similar experiences can keep people well.

Bereavement groups, carers groups for people caring for someone with a mental health problem or groups who support people with physical illnesses, can keep people mentally well as they have people to talk to who understand.

Social activities

We know that social isolation can be a major contributor to poor mental health.

Getting out and about with friends can give us all a lift. Doing fun things with fun people can boost mood. There are lots of opportunities to meet like minded people through activities such as dance classes, dog walking groups, the gym, volunteering and clubs.
