Module 07: The Differences Between a Lash Lift and Tint Treatment and a False Lash Application

7.1 Introduction

It is important to have a good understanding of lash treatments available to clients.
This will help you to advise your clients what will be best for them and to help them make choices
that will suit their individual needs and lifestyles.
An important distinction to be aware of is that between a lash lift and tint treatment and false lash
application. These are arguably the two most popular choices for clients seeking to create an
attractive semi-permanent lash effect.
It is important to be aware that an eyelash lift and tint treatment is very different to false lash
application. The main difference is, of course, that false lash application involves the adhesion of a
false lash onto the client's natural lash, whereas eyelash lift and tint treatments use only the client's
own lashes.

The effect created by each of these treatments also differs from each other. False lashes create a
very dramatic, much more noticeable effect, as they make the eyelashes look denser, longer and
bigger on the client's face.
An eyelash lift and tint treatment creates a much more subtle, yet very beautiful, effect with the
client's natural lashes. No additional product is attached to the lashes. It is a shaping, sculpting and
colouring treatment applied directly to the natural lash. For clients wanting a highly dramatic effect,
this look may be too subtle; however, for someone wanting a more natural look, false lash
application would probably be too conspicuous.
It is also important to advise the client that false lash application is a much higher-maintenance
treatment.

There is a long list of precautions that clients must observe when having false lashes applied, which
will affect the client's daily makeup and skincare routine.
The client must be aware of these precautions and be happy to incorporate them into their aftercare;
otherwise, there is a risk of damage to their eyelashes and, potentially, their eyes.
This level of upkeep can be off-putting to some clients, as it can even affect the client's ability to
sleep on their side.

For those seeking a lower-maintenance look, an eyelash lift and tint is a perfect solution. Not only
does this treatment work simply with the client's natural lashes, but there are also no side effects,
and nothing will happen to the lashes after the treatment, provided the correct patch testing
protocol is followed prior to the treatment.
With a false lash application, there is a much greater risk of degradation of the client's natural
eyelashes, which can become brittle, or even be dislodged, if correct aftercare procedures are
ignored.

Due to its lower-maintenance nature, eyelash lift and tint is becoming a much more popular
treatment than false lash application, as, for many people, it is a much more practical option.
Clients who do choose false lash application treatments may wish to have an eyelash lift and tint
between false lash applications, to give their eyelashes some respite, while still maintaining a
beautiful look.

7.2 Lift and Tint Top Tips

We recommend that you stock an array of tint colours so that you can offer clients a range
to choose from, and even mix colours up, for a bespoke look.
The most popular colours tend to be blue-black, black, dark brown, light brown and grey, although
there are endless options out there!
When helping a client select a colour, you should take into consideration their age, hair colour and
skin tone and the colour of any chosen eye makeup or mascara that they use.

The way in which the tint works is that, once mixed with the peroxide, these chemicals oxidise on
the hair, which opens up the hair cuticles so that the molecules of the dye can get in and swell,
becoming trapped in the hair, to give the visual effect of the hair taking on the colour.
The tint itself acts as a semi-permanent dye lasting 4-6 weeks. The lift treatment lasts longer — up to
12 weeks — but, if a client wishes to have both combined, we recommend rebooking the eyelash lift
and tint treatment after an interval of 8 to 10 weeks.

7.3 Aftercare

It is excellent practice to pre-prepare any relevant aftercare information digitally so that
you can send it to your client following their treatment.
The main principles to get across to the client are:

Keep the lashes dry for the first 48 hours after treatment.

Clients can shower and wash but
must avoid totally immersing their face in water, either in the shower or bath or by swimming.

Saunas and steam rooms should also be avoided for the first 48 hours.

Ideally, avoid applying any makeup for the first 24 hours after the treatment. This will reduce
any irritation. When they do resume makeup use, the client should avoid any harsh eye
makeup removers or rubbing their eyes roughly. A gentle makeup remover, paired with the
gentle movement of cotton wool, is best for removing makeup.
Avoid touching the area. This will help minimise any chance of infection or contamination.

If the client is using mascara, recommend that they use a good quality, conditioning mascara.
Cheap, drying mascaras are not recommended, as these can dry out the eyelashes and weaken
them. This is especially important for any clients who have had false lashes prior to an eyelash
lift and tint treatment. Additionally, they may wish to use an eyelash growth serum.
