Module 02: Tools and Equipment

2.1 Introduction

In this module, we will explain all the tools of the trade and all the equipment that you will
need, in order to conduct eyelash lift and tint treatments for your clients.
If you are already a practising beauty therapist, you may already have many of the items listed here,
but note that certain products are specific to this treatment
for example : silicon pads and adhesive.
You must only use eyelash silicon and eyelash adhesive, as other types of these products are not
suitable for working around the eyes. The same applies to the peroxide required to mix tint colours
— only use peroxide specifically for this purpose, as other kinds are not mixed in safe enough
concentrations for use around the eyes.
Although this may sound like a lot of equipment, bear in mind that this is an investment in your
business.

First of all, it is important to consider the kind of environment that you wish to create for your client.
They are coming to you to receive a beauty treatment, which you want to make as relaxing and
therapeutic for them as you can. What is the atmosphere like in your treatment space? You may wish
to consider the decor: perhaps muted colours, a diffuser with essential oils and perhaps play some
soothing music in the background. Try to create a relaxing and enjoyable experience for the client,
which begins as soon as they come through the door.

2.2 Equipment Required

Here's a list of all the equipment that you'll need:

Client record card
These are available from most good wholesalers.

Magnifying light

This is the best kind of light under which to work. You really need a powerful, bright light and a
powerful magnifier so that you can work with precision.

Couch

The most comfortable experience for the client will be lying down, so a beauty or massage couch is
ideal for eyelash treatments.

Couch roll

Ensure that you have a supply of disposable soft paper coverings, to place over the couch and
change between each client.

Towels and/or blankets

Depending on the kind of environment that you wish to create, provide covers for your client to lie
on or under so that they feel warm and comfortable. Ensure that all towels and blankets are freshly
laundered and smell fresh.

Bin

Ensure that you have a bin with a lid within reach while giving the treatment so that used items can
be safely and hygienically disposed of. Make sure that the bin is lined, to avoid product spillage.

Timer

A watch, phone, or clock will do; anything that will enable you to monitor how long you leave the
products on and ensure that you don't exceed the time stated by the manufacturer.
It's up to you what you use for this function, although using your phone is recommended, as you can
also use it to take great 'before and after' photos, to send to your client or use for marketing
purposes (with the client's permission).

Gloves and/or hand sanitiser

You must make sure that you either use brand new, clean gloves, or, if you are using your hands
uncovered, that you thoroughly sanitise them, before touching the client's eye area.

Mask

You will most likely want to use a mask while working in close proximity to the client's face.

Makeup remover

Make sure that you have a gentle, yet highly effective, eye makeup remover. Avoid anything oilbased or anything that could irritate the eyes. You want the eyes to be as undisturbed as possible,
both prior to and during the treatment.

Cotton wool pads (some dry and some to be dampened)

Ensure that you have a plentiful supply of circular cotton wool pads and access to clean water.

Bowl

It's practical to have a bowl to hand, in which to put your cotton wool.
Tape or pads
You will need something to keep the lower lashes out of the way, while you treat the upper lashes.
You can either use eyelash tape (available from wholesalers) or specially produced pads for this —
it's down to personal preference.

Silicon pads

These are used to measure up and create the curve shape given to the upper lashes in the treatment.
There are many different branded options, so choose a manufacturer with whom you trust and
resonate, and stock a few different shapes, to accommodate different clients' eyes.

Lash adhesive

Make sure that you buy lash adhesive designed specifically for this purpose.
Do not use any other kind of glue or adhesive, as this is extremely dangerous.

Perming solutions

Again, there are many different brands supplying these products. When applied to the lashes, these
products alter the chemical bonds in the structure of the hair, enabling it to be shaped and sculpted
into a beautiful curve.

Solution holder

This is a small plastic ring that you can wear on your finger and in which you can store a small
amount of perming solution for easy access while working.

Tint

There is a vast array of colours to choose from. We advise you to stock a variety of colours, to offer
your client, with the possibility of mixing colours, for a bespoke look. The core colours we
recommend are blue-black (the darkest), black, brown and grey. The tint colours will often come
with peroxide for mixing.
Only use the peroxide supplied for eyelash tinting; other peroxides are not safe for use around the
eyes.
Tint brush or orange stick
It's up to you which you prefer, but you'll need these for applying the tint to the client's eyelashes.
Cotton buds and eyelash spoolie brush
Have a ready supply of cotton buds, and at least one clean 'mascara wand', otherwise known as a
spoolie brush.

Cleaner

We recommend IPA (isopropyl alcohol) spray.
Handheld mirror
You will want to be able to hand the client a mirror at the end of the treatment so that they can
instantly see their beautifully tinted lashes.

Tint dishes

Aim to have several so that you always have spares, in case of breakage. You will need two, to enable
you to perform an eyelash lift and tint treatment: one for the tint and one for water, which you will
use to dissolve the adhesive.

Jar to store tools

We recommend using the container that comes with the barbicide, which you will also need because
this jar gives the exact measurements and instructions on how to mix your barbicide to the correct
concentration.
Barbicide
Store your 'just in case tools' in a jar of barbicide, to ensure that they are kept sterile, and resterilise them between clients.

Eyelash angling tool

Petroleum jelly, Tint developer, Tissues, Tweezers, Scissors
