2. What is Personal Data

Personal Data

Personal Data is any information about a person who can be identified as a result of the information.

Think about your information and details which you would like to keep private. You might be happy to tell a stranger your name and something relevant to the conversation. For example, telling the checkout assistant in the supermarket your child’s first name and which sweeties they like. But you wouldn’t tell them where you live or your date of birth.

It’s not just electronic data!

  • Full name
  • Address
  • Telephone number
  • Bank account details
  • Date of birth
  • Names of our children or loved ones
  • National Insurance Number
  • How much you earn

Think about what might happen if someone was able to join all this information together. You have access to lots of information about the individuals you support and you have a duty to make sure you keep them safe and do not share their information with people who do not have a right to know it.

Some data is particularly important and needs extra protection, this is called “Special Category Data”

Special Category Data is more sensitive and needs more protection.
In particular, this type of data could create more significant risks to a person’s fundamental rights and freedoms.  For example, by putting them at risk of unlawful discrimination.
