16. Pest control

Pests can carry bacteria and viruses that can cause serious illness, costly food waste and risk closing your business.

Common pests you might find in a place of work or home environment are:

Mice
Rats
Insects including flies
Birds
Cockroaches
Ants

Preventing pests from getting in is obviously the most effective form of pest control.

You can block up holes in brickwork, roofs, skirting boards and floorboards.  You need to reduce the attraction of a particular area to pests who are looking for food, warmth and shelter.  Food left exposed, unwashed containers, waste and used packaging will attract pests.

Look out for the signs that pests are present, these could be:

  • Droppings
  • Nests
  • Signs of chewing on food packaging or holes through walls or floors
  • Grease marks and tracks
  • Damage to structures or plants
  • Strange and musky smells
  • Hearing scratching noises
Your local council’s environmental health department may provide a pest control or pest identification service and you can ask them for advice on how to deal with pests and vermin.
