Lesson 8/14 | Study Time: 30 Min
8. Support and encourage individuals to drink in accordance with their plan of care

Some individuals may struggle to remember to drink or do not recognise when they are thirsty.

They will need regular prompts and reminders to drink to prevent dehydration.

If the weather is hot or an individual has been exercising, they are likely to need to drink more.

If using a cup with a lid on, it is important to make sure the individual knows this is for them.

Someone with dementia, who has insisted all their life that their tea should be in a mug, might not realise that the beaker with a lid has their tea in it!

Particular illnesses and conditions such as diabetes and other health needs of individuals depend on sufficient amounts of food and drink.

Record all food and drink intake in the individual’s care plan.

These are some of the other factors which will be documented in the care plan that can impact on a person’s food and drink, these include:

Religious
Cultural
Social
Rejected
Spiritual

Dietary requirements include meals, snacks, hot drinks and cold drinks.

Some individuals will like or want to drink alcohol.

You will need to ask your manager about your organisation’s agreed ways of working on alcohol consumption.

This may vary from person to person and between different work settings.
