4. Signs of autism in adults

Everyone who is autistic is an individual and has different needs, likes, preferences and challenges.

However, there are some common challenges that people with autism experience.

Getting very anxious before or during social situations like parties or eating out.
Finding it hard to make friends or prefer to be on their own.
Finding it hard to say how they feel.
Taking things very literally, e.g. they may not understand sarcasm or phrases like “break a leg”.
Having the same routine every day and getting very anxious if it changes, e.g. wearing the same pair of shoes.
Seeming blunt, rude or not interested in others without meaning to, e.g. yawning or looking round the room.

Research has shown that there are gender differences in people with autism. This can include with how they feel about their gender identity. Less females are diagnosed with autism, causing difficulties in accessing support to meet their needs.

We can all show some of these signs at times but this does not make us autistic.

Some people on the autistic spectrum will consistently display these behaviours to such a degree that they limit their daily lives and ability to function independently.

However, some people on the autistic spectrum will have developed coping strategies and will live full and independent lives.
