Everyone you support will have an individualised care and support plan which will detail all of their strengths, likes, needs, preferences, challenges and communication style and supports.
Individual is an important word. No two people you work with will be the same. Each person will have different needs so their individual plans around their needs, wishes, preferences and communication methods will provide you with important information about how to support them in the best way possible.
If you are working with people with specific conditions and challenges, you will need to ensure you get more information about these conditions so that you understand how you can meet their needs safely and effectively.
You can review the conditions related to autism by clicking on the link in the blue button.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, employers are required to carry out a risk assessment on the health, safety and wellbeing of workers and their working environment.
Any person you support that shows distressed behaviours or behaviour that challenges will have their own personalised risk assessments for each behaviour. It will show you what to do if a particular behaviour is shown and how to reduce any risks associated with that behaviour. It is essential to follow the information you are given from the risk assessment and also your organisation’s policies, procedures and agreed ways of working.
Your line manager will be able to support you to access and understand these.
There are lots of resources available, some we have already covered in this course. Below are some of the key resources and organisations who can provide further support and guidance.
