-The spine is made up of individual bones
called vertebrae.
-Ligaments and muscles connect these bones
together to form the spinal column.
-Take a closer look at the skeleton below.
Under the words spinal column on the left, you can follow the pale blue line to
see the 5 different vertabrae that make up the spinal column.
-Expand the points on the skeleton to
learn more about the vertabrae.
-The spinal column holds and protects the
spinal cord, which is a bundle of nerves that sends signals to other parts of
the body.It is the main pathway connecting
information to the brain. You cannot live without a spinal column. Between each
vertabra is an intervertebral disc which is like a soft round cushion acting as
a shock absorber.
-Intervertebral discs keep the vertebrae
separate when there is impact from activity, like when you are moving and
lifting.
Skin
Skin is made up of multiple
layers of ectodermal tissue and is the soft outer covering of the human body.
The skin guards the underlying muscles, bones, ligaments and internal organs.
As we get older, our skin becomes more fragile. It becomes thinner and more
easily damaged.
Bones
There are 206 bones in the human body.
All of your bones, except for one (the hyoid bone in your neck), form a joint
with another bone. Joints hold your bones together and allow your rigid
skeleton to move. Joints are the place where two bones meet.
