
Preparatory checks are an important part of health and safety which includes legal requirements. They should be carried out every time before you engage in moving and assisting people to move tasks.
You must always check to see if there are any changes to the following.
Essential care plan information includes the individual’s likes, dislikes, preferred communication method and their normal level of participation. Check these have not changed. Individuals have the right to request changes.
You can make minor adjustments if they do not affect health and safety or go against the risk assessment and care plan instructions.

Examples of environmental constraints that might be required prior to assisting and moving an individual:
You should conduct an ‘on the spot’ moving and handling risk assessment before you complete a task to cover hazards and risks, such as:
Before using any equipment, make sure that it is the correct item for the task.
Check it is properly maintained and fit for use.

Ensure that battery powered equipment is fully charged (or has enough charge to complete the manoeuvre).
Equipment needs to be maintained in line with manufacturers’ instructions and guidelines. Equipment safety is a legal requirement under Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) 1998 states employers must ensure lifting equipment is examined:
-Every 6 months for equipment used for lifting people.
-Every 12 months for lifting equipment used for lifting loads.
-After installation.
-After being moved to a new site or location.
