Lesson 4/10 | Study Time: 20 Min
4. List common types of personal protective equipment, procedures and correct use

You need to be aware of the common types of personal protective clothing, equipment and procedures and how and when to use them.

You should always wear the correct person protective clothing or equipment, known as PPE, for the correct procedure.

PPE will only protect you and others if you know how to use and dispose of it safely.

Avoid the risk of spreading germs by touching yourself, others and the environment with contaminated gloves. This is some general guidance.

Putting on disposable gloves…

  1. Select the correct glove size for your hands and the correct glove type for the task.
  2. Wash your hands before putting the gloves on.
  3. Pull the gloves onto your hands to cover your wrists.

Taking disposable gloves off…

  1. Grasp the outside of the glove with the opposite gloved hand and peel off.
  2. Hold the removed glove in the gloved hand.
  3. Slot your finger under the lip of the remaining glove and peel it off. Take care not to touch the contaminated outer surface.
  4. Dispose of the gloves, following your organisation’s disposal procedures.
  5. Wash your hands.

Removing disposable aprons…

  1. Unfasten (or break) the ties by placing your un-gloved hands inside the front of the apron and sliding your hands back along your body.
  2. Pull the apron away from your neck and shoulders, lifting it over your head and taking care to touch the inside only, not the contaminated outer side.
  3. Fold or roll the apron into a bundle with the inner side outermost.
  4. Dispose of the apron, following your organisation’s disposal procedures.
  5. Wash your hands.

It is important to wear and dispose of personal protective equipment and follow your employer’s policies, procedures and/or agreed ways of working.

Always wear PPE like gloves and aprons when supporting individuals.
Always wear a different set of aprons and gloves when you are working in the kitchen.
Never wear aprons outside of the working environment or to training courses as you could spread infections to other people you come into contact with.
Make sure you know which PPE to use in certain situations and how to dispose of them appropriately after use. Talk to your manager if you are unsure.
