1.2 Before the Client Arrives

1 Hygiene and safety:
The law requires proper standards of hygiene for any beauty business; this is particularly important due to the nature of the business, which entails close personal contact with clients and their skin Proper sterilising or disposing of used equipment is vital, to avoid infections and cross- contamination You should have well-thought-out checklists that you tick off, every time you are preparing for a client.
Hygiene should also include the personal hygiene of therapists; nails and hair should be clean and well-groomed, and hands should be clean, with healthy, intact skin - gloves can be worn if necessary Floors should be spotless in the treatment room, reception area and toilet area. The treatment couch and other furniture should be clean and wiped down with antibacterial wipes; fabric seat covers should be avoided, although warm blankets or sheets could be used for comfort.
You should tactfully avoid treating clients with an obvious skin infection.Thoroughly wash all linen, and sterilise non-washable surfaces. A hygienic treatment area and a clean, well-groomed therapist will give clients confidence that they are visiting a professional establishment.
2 Ambience:
The treatment area should be warm enough or cool enough, with adequate covers, towels and pillows
There should be good lighting, such as a magnifying lamp for treatments, and relaxing, subdued lighting, while clients are relaxing waiting, for a treatment to be completed
Relaxing therapeutic music can be played
Have lots of drinking water available
Use essential or diffuser oils, to create a pleasant, but not overwhelming, fragrance in the room
3 Basic equipment:
A comfortable, functional spa couch
A magnifying lamp
Couch rolls, electric blanket, warm blankets
Fan or air conditioning if the day is hot
A trolley that wheels soundlessly
A clean, comfortable, ergonomically-sound chair for the therapist
A facial towel warmer
A clean basin with hot and cold water
A variety of tools necessary for carrying out a facial; these would include simple tools, such as a blackhead remover or a complicated facial steamer, vaporiser or ice roller
Advanced equipment, such as a skin scanner, also has its place in a sophisticated salon
A range of appropriate facial and related products
The facial therapy salon can include advanced and sophisticated equipment or simple basic equipment, but the customer experience must be a great one.
