8. Providing care and support for people with Dementia

Many people with mild to moderate dementia are able to stay in their own home and live well with the right support.

Being in familiar surroundings can help people to cope better with their condition.

As the symptoms of dementia will get worse over time, many people eventually require support in a care home or a nursing home that offers services for people with dementia. It is possible and encouraged, for people to remain in their own homes. However, it is recommended that their needs are assessed so they, and the people around them, are appropriately supported.

A dementia diagnosis can come as a shock to the person with the condition and the people around them. However, there are sources of help and support for everyone involved.

If a person needs help to manage everyday tasks like washing, dressing or cooking, a “Needs Assessment” will be carried out through the local authority. This will identify the level of support they need and what support can be provided.

There is also support for unpaid carers who may be eligible for support and funding. This is done through a Carer’s Assessment.
