There is no definitive theory or answer that can fully explain why some people are more prone to low self-esteem than others. Current psychological thinking suggests that it is a mixture of genetic or inherited predisposition combined with life experiences and the parenting styles to which we were subjected as children.
As an individual human being, you have the right to think about the best future course of action that would best suit you. Remember, you also have the right to change your mind when it comes to future plans!
Note that, as far as rights are concerned, the opposite side of the coin is responsibility. Just as you and other people have the right to make mistakes, change your mind and so forth, you also have the responsibility to respect that right in others.
This module is about identifying and correcting some of the faulty assumptions and thought processes that require correction. Note that some of these can keep you stuck in aggressive ways of behaving and some in a passive approach. Since most of us behave in a variety of ways, depending on the situation and who else is around, you might recognise almost every counterproductive thought contained on this list! In each case, we are going to take a look at why you might be tempted to think such a thought and how to challenge it. In doing so, you will liberate yourself to behave in a more assertive manner.
You can choose your words carefully and try your best to sound assertive but, if your body language is not congruent with your attitude, then other people are not going to be convinced that you are truly assertive.
If you want to progress in your career, it is important to master the art of influencing other people, without engendering resentment. Influence is a highly sought-after skill amongst leaders so, if you aspire to a promotion or a position of responsibility, learn how to be a positive influence!
