4. Hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia and symptoms

Signs of hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar levels) in type 1 diabetes may include:

Frequent urination
Excessive thirst
Feeling more tired than usual
Unexplained weigh loss or gain
Frequent infections like thrush or cystitis
Slow healing wounds
Sight problems like blurred vision
Confusion, drowsiness or even coma
Poor concentration

Signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels):

Racing pulse
Cold sweats
Pale face
Headache
Feeling incredibly hungry
Shivering and feeling weak at the knees
Feeling restless, anxious or nervous
Confusion
Difficulty concentrating

The symptoms do not occur all at the same time and they will vary for different people. If you are unsure if an individual’s blood sugar is too low, it can be measured to check.
