Module 1: Introduction to Plastering Tools & Materials

Plastering is a skilled trade that involves applying a smooth, durable, and aesthetically pleasing finish to walls and ceilings. Module 1 serves as the foundation for beginners, introducing essential tools, materials, and basic concepts needed before starting any plastering work.

Key Tools in Plastering

A plasterer relies on several specialized tools to achieve a professional finish:

  • Trowel (Steel & Plastic) – The primary tool for applying and smoothing plaster.

  • Hawk – A flat square board with a handle, used to hold plaster while working.

  • Float (Wooden, Sponge, or Devil) – Helps in leveling and texturing the plaster.

  • Corner Trowel – Ensures crisp, clean angles on internal and external corners.

  • Bucket Trowel – Used for scooping and mixing plaster.

  • Scratcher/Comb – Creates a key for better adhesion between coats.

  • Spirit Level & Straightedge – Ensures walls are flat and plumb.

  • Mixing Paddle & Drill – For preparing plaster to the right consistency.

Essential Plastering Materials

Different types of plaster are used depending on the surface and desired finish:

  • Cement Plaster – Used for exterior and wet areas due to its durability.

  • Gypsum Plaster – Common for interiors, dries faster, and offers a smooth finish.

  • Lime Plaster – Traditional, breathable, and flexible, ideal for heritage buildings.

  • Ready-Mixed Plaster – Pre-blended for convenience, reducing mixing errors.

  • Bonding Agents (e.g., PVA, SBR) – Improves adhesion on smooth surfaces like concrete.

  • Mesh/Tape – Reinforces joints and prevents cracks.

Safety & Preparation

Before plastering, proper surface preparation is crucial—removing dust, grease, and loose material. Safety gear like gloves, goggles, and masks should be worn to protect from dust and chemicals.

This module ensures learners understand the fundamentals of tools and materials, setting the stage for hands-on plastering techniques in later modules.
