Brickwork technicians must have a thorough understanding of construction materials, tools, and equipment to ensure efficient, safe, and high-quality work. This module covers the selection, use, and maintenance of essential resources, as well as sustainable practices in modern bricklaying.


1. Types of Bricks, Blocks, and Mortars

Bricks

  • Common Clay Bricks: Made from fired clay, used for general wall construction. Available in different colors and textures.

  • Engineering Bricks: High strength and low water absorption, ideal for foundations, sewers, and damp-proof courses.

  • Concrete Bricks: Precast for durability, often used in load-bearing structures.

Blocks

  • Dense Concrete Blocks: Heavy and strong, used for load-bearing walls.

  • Lightweight Aerated Blocks: Easier to handle, provide better insulation, used in partition walls.

  • Thermalite Blocks: Lightweight with good thermal properties, often used in cavity wall construction.

Mortars

  • Cement Mortar (1:3 to 1:6 ratio): Strong and durable, used for structural brickwork.

  • Lime Mortar: More flexible and breathable, used in restoration work.

Storage Tips:

  • Bricks/blocks should be kept off the ground and covered to prevent moisture damage.

  • Mortar materials (cement, sand) must be stored in dry, sealed containers to avoid hardening.


2. Hand Tools and Power Tools

Hand Tools

  • Trowels (Brick & Pointing): For spreading and shaping mortar.
