Some other strategies involve…

Doing something you are good at. It will make you feel good. It might be a good way to make friends. It can help with work life balance.

Switching off the TV to talk or playing a game with children, friends or family.

Having lunch with a friend or colleague. Make it a regular thing.

Using technology to stay in touch with friends and family. Video chat apps are great, especially if you live far apart.

Appreciate and be present in the moment. Modern life is busy and hectic. Stop and savour the moment.

Take up meditation and practice mindfulness.

You will also find more information about this in our Stress and Resilience course.

Learn something new.

It can be a a way to meet people and be part of your community. Make trying fun and do not forget that it is ok if you fail. Most successful people have achieved by failing first.

Here is our last very important point…

These strategies are important for all of us, not just people who have experienced serious mental health problems.

Like Hannah, make your strategies part of your lifestyle. Make them your habits.

These strategies can help you to…

  • Have a happy and rewarding life
  • Build resilience, which is the capacity to recover from difficult life events.

Before we end the course, here are some useful resources…

Look for support groups in your community.

An example is Kent Sheds which is “a growing network of like-minded people of all ages, who take part in practical actives (such as woodwork) in informal spaces with friends”. They aim to promote positive mental health through companionship and meaningful activity.

“It means everything to me. It is a lifeline. Without it I am not sure I would still be here.”
