Module 3 : Boys vs. Girls Parties

3.1 Summary / What You Will Learn

This module deals with party requirements for boys and girls. Boys and girls have different
ideas for a party. This module will teach you about the differences between
boys and girls parties. Some of the things you will learn  include:

* Gender-based parties and how you can create parties for both genders
*  Popular girl's party themes
*  Popular boy's party themes
 * The requirements for a successful girl's party
The requirements for a successful boy's party

 3.2    Gender-Based Parties

Generally, the typical scenario is that parties for younger children are a mix of boys and girls.

As a kids' party planner,
you will find that most parents of younger children
plan co-ed parties.
These parties are a mix of boys and girls, and they should have activities that are appropriate to all.

Popular Unisex Party Themes:

* Prince/Princess

* Pirate/Mermaid

* Peter Pan/Tinker Belle

* Yo-Gabba-Gabba

* LEGO

* Circus

There are a few things that you should keep in mind when planning
a co-ed party. When children
are young, they all tend to
play together. However, as they grow a bit older, around the 4 or 5 year old
mark, this might not be the case. At this
point, boys often play with more 'boy' things, and girls
gravitate towards 'girl'
things. Does this mean a co-ed party cannot be successful? No, these parties
have the potential to be very successful. The trick is to make sure that
all children at the party in
enjoying himself or herself.

The guest list is also important when planning a co-ed kids' party. Depending
on the gender of the guest of honour, it might seem as if there are more boys than girls, or vice versa. If you have a guest list that has eight boys and two girls, you might find that this is problematic. The boys might leave the girls out, or the girls might get bored with the activities. This is also the case with too many girls and only a couple of boys. So, you should make sure that all activities at a co-ed party are appropriate for all children.

As the children
become older, the party guests are typically, if not all, of the same gender.
Subsequently, as the children grow into teenagers,
they may again revert to a mixed gender of girl and boy invitees.
A knight themed party is not likely to appeal to many girls, yet a knight and princess
party will appeal to both boys and girls.

Nonetheless, there will certainly be parties where it is a boys-only
or girls-only party. Therefore, the following themes will assist in all one's party planning needs. This includes
activities ideas that will ensure the burn up of copious energy of even the most boisterous in any group. We have covered the general party planning ideas, as well as invitation, decoration, snacks and food. There is also information about games and appropriate party activities.

 3.3    Girl's Party Themes

'Sugar and spice and everything nice, that's what little girls are made of!'

Planning a girl party is usually a joy. Everything
is cute for these little people and so fun and stylish
for the older girls. Naturally,
girls know exactly what they want, so when it is theme choosing time let the young lady decide. As a party planner, you should make sure to have some of the most popular
themes at the ready, and know how you can execute them appropriately.

Popular Girls-Only
Party Themes:

* Princess

* Puppy Dog

* Hello Kitty

* Girls
Only

* My Little Pony

* Minnie

* Dora the Explorer

* Pinkalicious

* The Little Mermaid

 These, of course, are only some of the popular girls-only party themes.

Remember, you should also make sure that you are taking suggestions from your clients.
Additionally, you should be paying attention to what children like. For example, if there is a new movie or television programme
that resonates with girls, start thinking of ideas. It will be very helpful for situations
where a new client approaches
you with a new character
or idea. You will have ideas for activities, menus, or favours ready for them immediately. This, of course, is quite impressive.

3.4    What is Required
for a Girl's Party?

 Some of the favourite
parties have been created for the girliest
of girls.

Now that you have some ideas of what themes you might work with for the girls, you now must learn about what is often required
for a girl's party. You will also learn that, though we try to lump girls into certain categories, not all parties will be pink. Yes, some girl's parties are quite traditional with loads of pink, princesses, dolls, mermaids, and ballet tutus.
Other parties, however,
might include glamour-camping, super-heroines, and jungle-
safari themes. Make sure that you keep an open mind when working with clients who are planning
parties for their girls.

Treat a daughter and her close friends like princesses for the day with some very popular
girls-only theme ideas:

Sleepover: Invite some of a daughter's
close friends to a sleepover
party. Pamper the guests with makeovers, munchies,
and movies.

Princess: Create a magical
day a daughter will never forget with tiaras and tutus.

Alice in Wonderland: Let the guests' imaginations flow with a mad tea-party
in Wonderland.

Spa: Spend
a daughter's day with close
friends, pampering and relaxing.

Garden: An indoor or outdoor magical garden with butterflies, ladybugs
and flowers.

If any party inspiration for a little lady is required, then look no further, for the following
party ideas are packed with
creative
ideas for decoration, snacks and sweets, party favours, and
so on. Bring out the pink (and blue, aqua or gold):

Pony or Horse: Girls love horses, and a horse-themed party is sure to please. Make it even more special by hiring a horse that the girls can ride. Better yet, have the party at a local horse stable.

Super Heroine:
Thanks to Marvel and other comic book franchises, gone are the days where only the boys like super heroes.

Science: Girls are also becoming much more interested in science. A science party, including some fun experiments, can easily win a girl's heart.

Painting: Painting
parties are also popular among girls, especially when guests can take their creations home.

To augment basic girls' only party consumables, such as cups, plates, decorations and napkins, consider buying, borrowing,
or hiring additional items for the event.

Some
of the most common additional items include:

* Dressing-up items, feather boas and tiaras,
etc.

* Spa and beauty consumables such as make-up,
nail polishes and bath accessories.

* Music and movies that are age specific for the age group.

* Costume and dress up jewellery.

* Girls' toys like dolls, craft kits, stuffed animals,
and toy horses.

Of course, the items you choose will greatly depend on the theme of the party. Additionally, some themes will require more of these things than others. These might add cost to the party, of course, but it also means that you can offer clients even more than your competitors.

Girls -Only Decorating Ideas

Young girls and pre-teen girls particularly like dressing in beautiful clothes and the elegance of it, besides
acting as being
grown up. Girls
are usually delighted at parties that encapsulate the natural beauty of femininity. Since this is the case, it is likely that you will focus on specific decorating ideas. For instance,
many girl parties
will have a pink or pastel colour scheme. Decorating with lace, tulle, or other materials is also a possibility.

Try to create glamorous
and girly themes to set a mood for a party by doing the following:

1.Ask the party going girls to bring their favourite music to play during an event, and allow ample
time or dancing.

2.At the party, hang a very large piece of paper on a wall. This can serve as a graffiti wall for the girls to sign and colour as each arrives and while waiting for all the other girls to gather.

3.Have some of a daughter's favourite
pictures of her friends blown up on a colour copier to hang about the party venue. It is fun for them to see themselves, especially if there are pictures from earlier times.

4.Create a dressing-up area with clothing, make-up, and nail polish. Let the girls
make each other over and ensure there are plenty of pictures
taken.

5.Buy plastic bracelets or necklaces made of beads, and use these to ring drink cups or cupcakes.

Girls -Only Party Food Ideas

It is true that for food, partygoers are usually quite content about eating hotdogs
or pizza; however,
if one has the inclination and the time and would prefer to present a more interesting selection.

Consider
other ideas or ways to serve up traditional snacks and eats.

1.Use heart or flower-shaped cookie cutters to make sandwiches and biscuits. Pink sandwiches can be made by self-baking bread and adding a few drops of red food colouring to the dough.

2.Freeze ice cubes of cranberry juice. Fill each girl's drink with ginger ale and let them put in their own ice cubes to make a bubbly pink drink.

3.Use tiny doll accessories, like purses, and shoes as cupcake toppers.

4.Line a fancy hat box or similar with wax paper or cling film and use it to serve French fries.

5.Fairy bread (sliced white bread spread with butter/margarine and covered with sprinkles/"hundreds
and thousands" and commonly served at children's parties in Australia and New Zealand)

6.Mini-tarts, which are perfect
for tea parties or other posh party theme.

7. Make sure to have alternatives to all of the food you serve at a party. This is especially the case if you know that a child has a food allergy.

Decoration Ideas for an All Boys Party

Party decorations can be simply general and suitable for any party, or they can be matched to the theme chosen for a boy's party. General
themes might have certain colours,
such  as  blue,
green,
brown, or yellow. The colour themes for boy's parties also tend to be earthy tones, which varies from the pastels often found at girl's parties.

These are some general ideas for a vibrant ambience at a boy's party:

*Use children's favourite colours as a basic theme scheme.
Hang streamers from a ceiling
and anchor clusters of balloons in the party area with small weights. Mylar balloons can be added to some of the balloon groups for added effect. If you are environmentally aware, please do not use balloons!

*Do you want to really create a boy's club? Send a secret password to the guests inside of their invitations. On the day of the party, mount a sign or banner on the door which says, 'Boys Only- Password Required'.

*Utilise toys used by boys for party decorations, such as toy trucks, action figures, Disney cars, train set items, or animal figures.

*When each guest arrives,
give them a party hat to wear. If it is a themed party, then match the hand-outs
to the theme, e.g. at a pirate or cowboy party, give pirate bandannas
or cowboy hats.

*Search some favourite pictures of the birthday boy and his friends and make blow up colour copies and position them around a party area. As with the girl's party theme above, the boys will also like photos that are from previous years, especially if the guests have been friends with the host for awhile.

*If the birthday boy and his pals like computer games, establish a point where they can each take turns to play a racing or sports game together. Make it a competition in order to encourage sharing and less screen time.

*If the weather is agreeable, create an outside obstacle course for the boys to run through.
This is a good activity for them to burn up excited energy.

Boys-Only Food Ideas

You cannot go wrong with party staples
such as sausages, French fries, pizza, and dips to feed a posse of hungry boys.

However, if you want to also have a few different
treats, consider the following:

1. Try truck or dog shaped cookie cutters to shape cookies and sandwiches. Jelly can also be cut into shapes after it has set.

2,Also try homemade pretzels
served with different
toppings, such as Parmesan cheese,
sea salt,
cinnamon and sugar, even chocolate powder.

3.Freeze red soft drinks into ice cubes prior to a party. Later, fill each boys cup with fizzy ginger ale and let them put the coloured ice cubes in the drink for a magic bubbly effect.

4.Serve up the drinks with silly straws.

5.Create camouflaged Candy Apples.

6.Fairy cakes can make a boy's party magical,
too, just make sure to keep them themed for boys.

Module Summary

This module taught you that there is a world of difference
between hosting all girl's party in relation
to all boy's parties. While the girl's party may be themed around colours
and topics associated
with little girls, the boy's party themes are likely to be more physical
and boisterous. The requirements for the two are also very different.
The decorations, the games, and favours will all be influenced by the gender for which you are hosting the party.

You do not expect boys to be ecstatic about getting pretty bow pins or hairbands
for favours, just as girls may not very happy with swords.
You need to keep the gender in mind while planning a party, and keep the wishes of your clients in mind, just the same.
